The protagonist of this tragicomedy is Kristóf Méhn, a painter-turned-bank-archivist who lives with his wife, Vera, in a ground-floor apartment. The story unfolds on the day Kristóf accidentally discovers a patch of mold on their wall and, shortly thereafter, learns from Vera that they are expecting a baby. He resolves to uncover the source of the mold. While questioning neighbors he previously didn't know, his conflict intensifies with the ingratiating building manager, who is intent on pushing through a major elevator installation project at the late-afternoon residents' meeting. As Kristóf becomes increasingly entangled in the building's affairs, a suspicion grows within him: the building itself is sick.
